Mother Teresa Awards and Noble Prize
Mother Teresa was awarded the Noble Prize in 1979 for her charity work and endless endeavors for the poor and needy. Not only Mother Teresa was awarded Noble Prize but numerous other awards too from organizations and governments for her charity work and love for humanity.
She came to be known as ‘Saint of the Gutters’ for her compassion and zeal to work for the poor and tried her best to help the suffering. The Norwegian Nobel Committee admired her efforts and said that “her spirit and the respect she had for the worth and dignity of human beings inspired constructive efforts to do away with hunger and poverty”.
Mother Teresa’s greatest achievement was the Missionaries of Charity that she started in October 1950 that began from one rented room. However, it was due to her endless hard work and continuous efforts that she was able to work and make it into a big organization that looked after the poor and diseased people of Calcutta.
Now, even years after her death, the priests and nuns from the Missionaries of Charity, including those ex-communist countries where she was banned are working day and night to help the underprivileged people of this world. The Missionaries of Charity has its offices all over the world that includes Europe, Africa, the Americas and Australia, as well as Hong Kong and Russia.
Due to her efforts, Mother Teresa was recognized and very much appreciated by people as well as organizations all over the world and she received numerous awards and distinctions on behalf of her organization. It was in 1971 that Pope John XXIII awarded her the Peace Prize. She also received the Nehru Prize for promotion of International Peace and understanding in the world in 1972. In 1979 she was the recipient of the Balzan Prize as well as the Templeton and Magsaysay awards for her efforts and charity towards the poor of this world.

- States Presidential Medal of Freedom (1985).
- Congressional Gold Medal (1994).
