Even though she stopped acting as the patroness or president of over 100 social institutions and charitable organizations that she looked after before her divorce to Prince Charles, she took her role as a patron of the English National Ballet, the Leprosy Mission and the British AIDS Help seriously and continued to work for them even afterwards. Along with these, she remained the head of children's hospital Great Ormond Street and the Royal Marsden Hospital. Due to her activities and charity work for most of her life, she was accepted as the Honorary Citizen of Northampton in 1989 as well as received the Prize for Humanity.

Princess Diana’s life story mostly revolves around her charity work started after she got married to Charles in mid-to late 80’s. Even though most of her charity work began as a duty; as the Princess of Wales, it was her responsibility to visit hospitals, comfort the sick and poor. However, all along the way, it stopped being a duty and became a passion that made her patron of several charities, hospitals and homes for poor.

Due to Public Relations efforts, when she agreed to appear as their representative; Diana used her status and her influence to assist the campaign against landmines, a cause that won her the Nobel Prize in 1997. Her contribution helped to decrease discrimination against the victims of AIDS and made other people realize that it was something that could be lived with.
Although after her divorce to the Prince of Wales, Diana declared that she would no longer take part in charities, she soon came to realize that the needs of poor and diseases people were far greater than her wish to help them. Apart from helping the AIDS victims and the landmine cause, Diana also went to meet and help people from all walks of life, which were suffering severe problems and were not living in the best of conditions.
There was hardly a function or a gathering where Princess Diana went without a purpose and that was to collect money for her charity, for the poor, hungry, sick and needy. Due to her constant supervision and keen participation, charity acquired a new meaning in not only England but a larger part of the world. From handing out flowers to donating money, charity took a new turn when the Princess of Wales was seen holding sick children on her lap, feeding them or holding the hands of an AIDS patient on verge of death.
