Nelson Mandela Biography


A former president of South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in the small village of Mvezo in the district of Umtata, the Transkei capital. He belonged to a cadet branch of the Thembu dynasty that reigned in the Transkeian Territories of the Union of South Africa's Cape Province.

After his release from prison in 1990, Nelson Mandela switched to a policy of reconciliation and cordial relations and tried to eradicate multi-racial discrimination through negotiations and peace talks. Since his pursual of this cause and end of apartheid, he became a well known personality even admired by his opponents.

Nelson Mandela was South Africa’s first democratically elected president and won the office by a large number of votes in elections in which full political freedom was granted, for the first time, to the candidates contesting the elections. The elections were held on 27 April 1994 in which the African National Congress won 62% votes and Mandela as the leader of the party was sworn in on 10 May 1994.
